Choosing where to live

Where should you live in the canton of Vaud?

There is no single best municipality for everyone. Start with what needs to work each day, then explore the places where you would enjoy living.

Find my municipalities

A realistic commute first. Your priorities next. An address-level check before deciding.

Start with daily journeys, not a straight line on a map

A nearby municipality may require a connection or a long walk. A direct service can make a more distant place worth considering. Enter the workplace address, transport mode, maximum commute and, for public transport, your latest arrival time.

For two people, compare both commutes from the same residential sector. The geographical midpoint between two offices is not necessarily the best compromise.

  • Which commute is sustainable several days a week?
  • Do you need to meet two people’s travel constraints?
  • Which everyday services matter to your household?

Some starting points for exploring Vaud

These are geographical starting points, not region-wide ratings or journey promises. Include neighbouring municipalities: district boundaries do not tell you what suits you.

  • Lausanne and western Lausanne: compare Lausanne, Renens and Ecublens, among others.
  • Morges and Nyon: explore surrounding municipalities as well as the centres.
  • Lavaux and the Riviera: distinguish lakeside locations, hillsides and actual access to a home.
  • Gros-de-Vaud: use Echallens, Assens or Bercher as starting points.
  • Jura–Nord vaudois: explore around Yverdon-les-Bains, Orbe or Sainte-Croix.
  • Broye and the Vaud Alps: consider Payerne, Avenches, Aigle or Château-d’Œx if your commutes allow it.

Separate limits from preferences

Your maximum commute is a limit. Surroundings and services are preferences to weigh up. Consider which trade-offs you could accept: another connection for a setting you prefer, or a more urban location for a simpler journey.

PlaceForMe uses priorities to order compatible municipalities. Missing data does not prove that a service does not exist. A municipality-level estimate does not describe every street.

  • A more urban or rural setting.
  • Shops, schools and services you actually use.
  • Budget and available homes, checked separately in listings.

Move from possibilities to a particular home

Keep a few municipalities, compare their details, then look for homes, including through the Comparis links. Rankings do not guarantee a listing’s price or availability.

Before deciding, check the journey from the exact address on the days and at the times you need. Visit the neighbourhood and confirm relevant services. Map zones are indicative, not a guarantee for every address inside them.

PlaceForMe supports exploration rather than providing a universal best-place ranking. A personal search adds the context a general guide cannot provide.

Sources and method

Municipality examples are geographical starting points, not calculated results. This guide explains the current PlaceForMe method and publishes no personal profile. Confirm timetables and local information with the relevant sources.
